TDP Telangana MLAs to boycott budget session

HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Telangana MLAs have decided to boycott the entire Budget session of the Assembly.

A decision to this effect was taken at a Telangana TDP Forum (TTDPF) meeting convened in the TDLP office today.

Briefing reporters later, party MLAs M Narasimhulu, S Venugopalachary, D Anasuya and E Dayakar Rao said they had decided to boycott the entire session as there was no possibility of discussing Telangana issues in the Assembly. The TDP MLAs earlier decided to boycott the session till March 10 and wanted to review after the Million March.

Narasimhulu demanded that the Central government should take an immediate decision on the Srikrishna Committee report. A bill favouring division of the state should be introduced in the Parliament, he demanded.

However, according to sources, the real reason behind the Telangana MLAs' decision to boycott the session was the attitude of Nagam Janardhan Reddy. They were wary of the possibility of Nagam creating a ruckus in the House causing embarrassment to them and the party in case they attended the session. On the other hand, they felt that their presence in the Assembly might also send wrong signals to the public at a time when the Telangana MLAs of the Congress and the TRS too were not attending the session.

NAGAM NOT HAPPY: Meanwhile, sources said that Nagam Janardhan Reddy was not happy with the way the Assembly proceedings were conducted today. He was upset with the attitude of TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, who visited the Tank Bund before attending the session.

The lengthy discussion in the House on the demolition of statues was also not to the liking of several Telangana TDP MLAs. "There is no time to discuss the Telangana issue or the suicide of more than 600 students in the Telangana region, but there's time to discuss the demolition of statues," a TDP Telangana MLA pointed out.

"We have decided to boycott the Assembly session till the demolished statues were erected again," a Telangana TDP MLA said sarcastically.

Andhra MLC polls to test loyalties of MLAs

HYDERABAD: The elections for 10 MLC seats under MLAs quota is likely to expose the political loyalties of the legislators of all the parties as 12 candidates are in the fray.

The Congress and the TDP fielded one candidate extra, while the TRS too is in the fray to avoid possible poaching of its MLAs.

At the rate of 29 votes for each MLC candidate, 10 contestants should win unanimously. But in a strategic move, the Congress, the TDP and the TRS fielded their candidates over and above their strength.

The Congress with 155 MLAs and three associate members, fielded M Ranga Reddy as its fifth candidate. The TDP has fielded three and is supporting the CPI candidate for the fourth seat. TDP leaders said all the four candidates enjoyed equal status and there was no question of giving least priority to any of them.

"The TDP chief assured us that the CPI would get a comfortable number of votes. Giving least preferential votes to the CPI candidate is ruled out," a CPI leader exuded confidence.

The TDP has 91 MLAs in the Assembly. It is not yet known whether the two TDP rebel MLAs, who are loyal to Jagan, will participate in the voting. The strategy to be adopted by the around 25 MLAs from the Congress, the PRP and the TDP, who are loyal to YS Jagan, is also not yet clear. Whether they will participate in the voting and, if so, whether they will vote for the Congress remains to be seen. The Jagan group did not field any candidate.

The TDP is likely to allot 23 votes to each candidate. "We will work out in a manner that all the three TDP and the one CPI candidate are elected," a TDP leader said. "We are expecting a split in the Congress and Jagan group votes," he said.

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy too is confident of winning all the five seats. The TRS, which has only 11 MLAs in the Assembly, will get the support of two BJP MLAs. There are reports that the Jagan group's MLAs may support the TRS candidate.

HYDERABAD: Will TDP leader N Janardhan Reddy quit the party? - this was the hot topic of discussion among political circles a day before Janardhan’s likely meeting with party president N Chandrbabau Naidu on Thursday to discuss the issue of creation of a separate Telangana state unit in the party. The party has already clarified that there will be no separate unit for T within TDP.

When Janardhan Reddy convened a separate meeting with some party MLAs and politburo members recently, the TDP chief had informed him that they would sit and discuss the issue on Jan 13. It is not clear yet if Naidu will hold the meeting on Jan 13 or postpone it to a date after Sankranti. But the question that is haunting the TDP is what would Janardhan Reddy, a politburo member, do if Naidu refuses to concede his demand for a separate T unit.

Politburo members K Srihari, E Dayakar Rao and several Telangana MLAs too have been demanding a party T unit.“My political future is at stake due to the Telangana movement. People are not trusting the TDP on T issue. All our efforts, including the demand for a separate T unit, are for a bright future,” admitted a TDP MLA from Mahaboobnagar district.

Naidu’s close aides in the party held a series of discussions in the last three days with Nagam but could not convince him on the issue, sources said. The question now is whether Nagam, who did not reveal his future plans, will be satisfied with a separate coordination committee or quit the party.

Grapevine has it that Nagam may float his own outfit. In that case, the moot question is whether the party seniors, who are backing him now, will sail along with him.

Nagam floating his own party and striking an alliance with Jagan’s soon-to-be formed party is also being mooted.

Naidu, Nagam differ on Telangana strategy

HYDERABAD: The friction between TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana TDP Forum (TTDPF) convenor Nagam Janardhan Reddy still persists on how to carry forward the T-struggle. Nagam, who skipped the Assembly session, was irked at the behaviour of the MLAs in the Assembly today. TDP members, from Telangana as well as Seemandhra displayed placards in the Assembly today demanding the Centre to clear the ‘political uncertainty’ in the state. Nagam was of the opinion that asking Centre to remove the political uncertainty in the state will send a wrong signal to the Telangana people that the TDP favoured a unified state. “TTDP Forum’s main demand is formation of Telangana and the Centre should introduce a Bill in the Parliament,” Janardhan Reddy told his close aides. However when some Telangana MLAs informed him what had happened in the Assembly, he immediately rushed to the Assembly to set the records straight.“TTDP Forum’s main goal is to achieve separate Telangana. The Centre should introduce a Bill in the Parliament,” he told reporters at a media conference in the evening. The friction between party chief and TTDP Forum convenor was not limited to mere displaying of placards. Earlier when the TTDPF wanted to meet home minister Sabita Indra Reddy and submit a memo demanding withdrawal of paramilitary forces in the region, the direction from Naidu was that the MLAs should only meet the home Minster and not submit any written memo to her. Nagam was unhappy over this. “When we submit a written note to the home minister, the police would harass the students as the memo would mention their names. Oral representation is enough,” one Telangana MLA opined. It may be recalled that Naidu conceded the demand of some MLAs and decided to replace the TTDPF with Telangana Coordination Committee. This also was not to the liking of Nagam. The gap between the two leaders has been widening.“You are shaking hands with the TRS leaders. But, the ground reality is different. The TRS workers have been attacking TDP leaders,” a senior TDP leader complained to Nagam today.Naidu was not happy with Nagam’s independent way of dealing T-issue while the latter is of the opinion that Naidu was not giving a free hand to him. However, several T MLAs felt that Naidu’s new strategy on Telangana was helping the party as the TJAC was targeting the Congress MLAs and sparing the TDP.

Nagam doesn’t want to continue as TTDPF convener

HYDERABAD: There is a clear cut division in the Telangana TDP with only 18 MLAs attending the TDP Telangana Forum meeting convened by Nagam Janardhan Reddy, the forum convener today at the TDLP office, is any indication.

Though there was no significant decision taken at the meeting, Nagam made his intentions clear that he did not want to continue as the forum convenor. He also intimated the same to TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu. When the forum met here today to discuss about the Million March, Nagam dropped the bombshell saying that he would not like to continue as forum convenor.

However, several TDP MLAs loyal to Chandrababu Naidu skipped Nagam’s meeting.

It may be recalled that when Naidu called for a meeting of all TDP Telangana MLAs at his residence recently, several senior MLAs did not attend but held a separate meeting.

Speaking to Express, Nagam said: “I want freedom. I want to work as Nagarkurnool MLA. So that I can express my feelings openly as an individual”.

He, however, suggested the party leadership to elect a new convenor, who was acceptable to all the 37 Telangana MLAs.

Meanwhile, senior TDP MLA Motkupalli Narasimhulu, who skipped today’s meeting, said that he would not work under Nagam’s leadership. “I would rather work under TJAC chairman Prof M Kodandaram, but not with Nagam,” he declared.

So the moot question now is how many Telangana MLAs will sail with Janardhan Reddy? A Seemandhra MLA felt that at the most, Nagam may influence four to five MLAs. He will end up like T Devender Goud, who launched his own outfit for Telangana and later rejoined TDP via PRP, the MLA

said.

Meanwhile, the forum members met chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at his chambers in the Assembly today and requested him not to file cases against T activists who are coming from different districts to Hyderabad to participate in the Million March on Thursday.

Telangana storm in TDP blows over

HYDERABAD: There will neither be a separate Telangana unit in the TDP nor a Coordination Committee for the region. The existing Telangana Telugu Desam Party Forum (TTDPF) will continue.

This was the outcome of a meeting held by TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu with party T-seniors today. Naidu has tightened his grip over warring T-leaders and, at the same time, gave full freedom to them to carry forward their movement for separate state. After the meeting, all the Telangana leaders sang the unity tune.

“We have reconciled our differences and decided to continue our fight for separate Telangana,” a TDP leader told Express. Janardhan Reddy will continue as the TTDPF convener. The Forum will not have any other leader except him. “I will fight for a separate Telangana under the TTDPF. There will be no separate unit for the Telangana TDP,” Janardhan Reddy said.

Earlier, Janardhan Reddy caused embarrassment to the party by holding separate meetings. Recently, he came under attack by senior MLA M Narasimhulu for his attitude. In today’s meeting, Naidu reportedly told the T seniors that they were free to plan and organise suitable agitations in their respective areas. He, however, wanted them to brief him on any key policy decisions affecting Telangana region.

Sources said there was a heated argument between Janardhan Reddy and Naidu at one point of time. Nagam reportedly told Naidu that if the party did not take a firm decision on T, it would be finished in the region. Naidu reportedly shot back: “I know better than you whether the party will be finished or will flourish.” After that Nagam agreed to work with the other leaders under the TTDPF.

Naidu pointed out that it was the Congress which had promised to deliver T and TRS which had promised to bring the T. “The TDP has a limited role and could only launch agitations for T along with the masses,” Naidu reportedly informed his party leaders.

HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam MLAs from the Telangana region offered to resign from the Assembly if such an action can ensure creation of Telangana state.

Speaking to reporters here today, M Narasimhulu, A Revanth Reddy and others said that they would put in their papers if their counterparts in the ruling Congress and other parties did so. “We are not after posts or positions. Telangana is important to us,” they declared.

On Nagam Janardhan Reddy’s behaviour in the Assembly today, they said that as Nagam, TTDPF convener, wanted to become a hero and paint others as betrayers of Telangana. “When 600 students committed suicide Nagam was holding PAC meetings. First of all, he should resign from that post,” they demanded.

Narasimhulu accused Nagam of blackmailing other MLAs. “He is acting on his own without taking us into confidence.” At Saturday’s TTDPF meeting Nagam said that he would abide by the decision of the forum and attend the meeting, Narasimhulu said and wondered why he acted against the decision of all T-MLAs.

Wondering why Nagam never uttered a word against Union minister S Jaipal Reddy, Revanth Reddy demanded an explanation from Nagam Janardhan Reddy.

Telangana: TDP split into Nagam, Babu groups?

HYDERABAD: The Telangana TDP MLAs seem divided into two groups. When party chief N Chandrababu Naidu held a meeting with them late in the evening to take stock of the situation following N Janardhan Reddy’s T-missile, 50 per cent of the MLAs skipped the meeting. Of the 38 T-TDP MLAs, only 19 attended it. Several senior MLAs, who are closely associated with Nagam Janardhan Reddy, were conspicuous by their absence.

Sources said that Naidu personally called up his T-MLAs to attend the meeting. But, most of them were not accessible to Naidu over phone. They may come up with some excuse or the other tomorrow but their disregard of the party supremo will have a great impact on the party in the region. Naidu did not invite Nagam to the meeting.

Those who absented themselves included Uma Madhava Reddy, Hareeswar Reddy, Annapurnamma and P Ramulu.

Those who attended the meeting resolved to carry forward the movement for separate state under the auspices of TTDPF. The meeting also decided to send a five-member delegation to Nagam Janardhan Reddy to convince him that the TDP was committed to the Telangana cause. Accordingly, MLAs Tummala Nageswara Rao, Revuri Prakash Reddy, Jaipal Yadav, S Venugopalachary and P Mahender Reddy met Nagam at his residence.

Speaking to reporters later, Venugopalachary recalled that the TDP had adopted a resolution in favour of Telangana and did not change its stand even after its defeat in the 2009 elections. “We urged Nagam to work collectively under TTDPF. Nagam is our family member,” he added.

Nagam-Naidu duel reaches tipping point

HYDERABAD: The long simmering differences between TDP Telangana Forum (TTDPF) convenor Nagam Janardhan Reddy and party chief N Chandrababu Naidu reached a flash point on Monday with the former threatening to chalk out his own path “if the Centre refuses to concede a T State or the TDP fails to take a pro-T stand.”

The declaration came soon after an ugly spat between Nagam and five TDP Telangana legislators in the State Assembly, in the presence of Naidu. Nagam single-handedly disrupted the proceedings and forced adjournment of the House for the day.

Later, he claimed the support of a majority of the party’s 38 T legislators who stayed away from the Assembly proceedings. Though MLAs Revanth Reddy and M Narasimhulu disputed his contention, late in the evening, about 19 T MLAs of the party skipped a meeting convened by Chandrababu Naidu lending credence to Nagam’s claims. The Nagam act was waiting to happen, notwithstanding the dramatic nature of the development. He had been at odds with Naidu on the strategy to be adopted in and outside the Assembly. While the TDP chief wanted his men to focus on pressing people’s issues, Nagam’s view was that at a time when the Telangana stir was in full swing, it would be fool hardy to champion other causes.

Hence, though the TTDPF had on Saturday decided to call off its “Assembly boycott” — since the T employees in whose support the call was given had themselves withdrawn their “non-cooperation movement”— Nagam remained unconvinced and vowed to stall the Assembly proceedings. True to his word, he played the lone warrior, with some support from Banswada MLA Pocharam Srinivas Reddy who had recently quit the TDP.

The TDP chief had been consistently nipping the plans of Nagam in the bud. Nagam had proposed many things, including a separate party unit for Telangana and coordination with other parties on the T issue, to name a few.

However, Naidu rubbished them all and instead advised his T men to work out their own strategy and ensure the party’s survival in the region.

Now that Nagam has taken his campaign a notch higher, what will Naidu do? Going by the verbal duel during the day, it appears that the former chief minister will encourage party’s T MLAs M Narasimhulu, A Revanth Reddy and others and sideline Nagam. He may also exclude Nagam from the proposed coordination committee on T. In short, he may make it too hot for Nagam to stay in the party.

Narasimhulu and Revanth Reddy, in a sign of the things to come, locked horns with Nagam, accusing him of “ditching” them and acting at the behest of a “political party” (read TRS). They in fact branded him a Drohi of not only the T cause but also of the TDP. Nagam, though, scoffed and claimed he was acting at the behest of the people.

Wait and see what I do: Nagam

HYDERABAD: Telangana TDP Forum convenor Nagam Janardhan Reddy, who created a flutter in the Assembly by raising Jai Telangana slogans, received a flood of telephone calls from people from almost all the districts of the region. The callers included not only TDP activists but also Osmania University professors, advocates and students. Nagam poured his heart out while answering the innumerable phones calls.

Excerpts from a quick interview with Express:

What was the provocation for you to stall the proceedings?

The TDP took a pro-Telangana stand in 2008 and my strategy in the Assembly on Monday was in accordance with the party’s stand.

Your own party MLAs allege that you have a personal agenda to push the T cause hard in the party.

I have no personal agenda. Everyone knows my character.

Not many seem to believe what the TDP says on Telangana. What should the party do to reverse the trend?

The people are for Telangana. A party can survive only with people’s support. A leader survives as long as the party survives. So, the people’s agenda is my agenda.

You urged the deputy speaker to give you an opportunity to speak. What did you want to say?

I wanted to highlight the injustice meted out to Telangana right from 1968. I had prepared my speech.

T Devender Goud launched his own party and failed to enthuse voters. Some feel that you may end up like Goud. What is your comment?

Ask that gentleman (Goud) why he launched the party, why he merged it with the PRP and why he rejoined the TDP.

There is an opinion that you are singled out in TDP.

I am not alone in my fight. People are with me.

You are penning a book, Nenu _ Naa Telangana. Now, will you include the role of Chandrababu Naidu in the book?

I will also highlight the Seemandhra media’s role.

Will you stall the Assembly tomorrow too?

I will not reveal my strategy. When around 100 Telangana MLAs were elected on a common platform and stalled the proceedings, will the House be able to transact any business?

So, when will you make a historic speech in the Assembly before quitting the House?

(Laughs) Wait and see.
